It was a long while before I found the energy to fight back, but fight back I did, aided and abetted by the change in season and a timely reminder that happiness is an inside job.
There were some shining days in August too though, the boys and I went to the zoo (and had fun taking photos with inanimate things)....
Son Son's posing face. Te he |
The pelican was a favourite (and the giraffes - who couldn't love a giraffe?) somehow regal and goofy all at the same time....
We went by twice....
How unreal is that green water!? |
So much walking that afternoon, visits and re-visits.
We went by the lions what felt like fifty times but could only see a tuft of mane above the rock, Son Son was pretty disappointed. But then! all tuckered out and headed home, almost at the gate to leave, we heard an almighty roar that stopped us in our tracks. We just looked at each other, wide-eyed, then another roar and we turned around and hot-footed it back up that hill to the lions. He was still out of sight but there were three lionesses catching the last of the sun and calling back to him. It felt like some outrageous triumph to be there, we were a little giddy.
Thanks Kind Stranger for snapping one of the three of us :) |
And finally, an iceblock for the tired ride home.
Wellington Zoo does 'Winter Wednesdays' through August with heavily discounted entry -making it a do-able thing for us ( the last time we went was last August, I remember so well riding the bike there with Spike and an only-just-pregnant-tum ).
The end of the month had Wellington Lux up it's sleeve, a series of temporary light installations around the waterfront and nearby laneways.
Oh August! you're not all rough.
But this has already been too many photos, and honestly, my eyes are swimming a little. Lux can be another post....
Goodnight You.
